Albanian is spoken by about 6 million people, mainly in Albania and Kosovo. There are 2 principal dialects: Gheg, the northern dialect, and Tosk, the southern dialect and official language of the Republic of Albania.

The Foreign Service Institute has classified Albanian as a "Hard" language. It is estimated that learning Albanian to a Professional Working Proficiency in the language (a score of Speaking-3/Reading-3 on the Interagency Language Roundtable scale) will take an average of 44 weeks (1100 class hours).[1]
