Azerbaijani (/ˌæzərbaɪˈdʒɑːni, ˌɑː-, -ˈʒɑːni/) or Azeri (/æˈzɛəri, ɑː-, ə-/), also sometimes referred to as Azeri Turkic or Azeri Turkish, is a macrolanguage and refers to two Turkic languages (North Azerbaijani and South Azerbaijani) that are spoken primarily by the Azerbaijanis, who live mainly in Transcaucasia and Iran. North Azerbaijani and South Azerbaijani have significant differences in phonology, lexicon, morphology, syntax, and loanwords.

The Foreign Service Institute has classified Azerbaijani as a "Hard" language. It is estimated that learning Azerbaijani to a Professional Working Proficiency in the language (a score of Speaking-3/Reading-3 on the Interagency Language Roundtable scale) will take an average of 44 weeks (1100 class hours).[1]
