There is not a single Japanese script per se; multiple writing systems are used to write the Japanese language. In its modern form, it boils down to two syllabic character sets, a subset of the Chinese characters and to some extent the Latin set.

As far as the learner is concerned, a good command of both kana and kanji (literally, Chinese character) is required for proficiency. For more exhaustive information and history, see Wikipedia here.
