Portuguese is spoken by about 170 million people, mainly in Portugal and the Portuguese Atlantic islands, Brazil, and Portugal's former overseas provinces in Africa and Asia.

Shares common orthography with Brazilian Portuguese since agreement in force from 2012. There are significant differences in pronunciation, and preferred forms.

Common difficulties

The Foreign Service Institute has classified Portuguese as a "World" language. It is estimated that learning Portuguese to a Professional Working Proficiency in the language (a score of Speaking-3/Reading-3 on the Interagency Language Roundtable scale) will take an average of 24 weeks (600 class hours).[1]
